Start saving money and help put a stop to wasting food by making friends with your freezer!
According to research (opens in new window), we throw food out for two main reasons:
1) we let food go off, either completely untouched, or opened/started but not finished, costing £6.7 billion per year.;
2) we cook or prepare too much, costing us £4.8 billion per year
Food waste is damaging to the environment because producing, storing and getting the food to our homes uses a lot of energy and resources – all of which are wasted when food gets binned. And most of this food reaches landfill sites where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
So when you get home after shopping, why not put as many items as you can straight into the freezer. If you have large bags of meat or fish, then divide them into smaller portions before freezing.
Also check use-by dates of perishable foods in your fridge regularly. You can move them into the freezer if you don’t get a chance to eat them before they reach their use-by dates.
We’ve also got some tasty freezer recipes, so why not try one of these to get you started. Choose from:
- Barbecue pork with plums and orange
- Turkey and sweetcorn burgers
- Beef, Guinness and mushroom stew with dumplings
- Lentil, aubergine and tomato moussaka
- Pork meatballs with spicy tomato sauce
